  • Scientists used specialised benthic chambers to isolate sections of the seafloor and monitor chemical changes, observing unexpected increases in oxygen levels.
  • The study suggests that these nodules may function like batteries, facilitating electrochemical reactions that break down seawater into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), these polymetallic nodules are typically found in the abyssal plains of the Pacific Ocean.
  • This finding challenges the conventional scientific belief that Earth's oxygen is primarily produced through sunlight-dependent photosynthesis.

India Ranks Third in Global Rare Earth Reserves Amidst Production and Processing Challenges (End of December)
  • India holds about 6.9 million tonnes of rare earth oxide (REO) reserves, placing it behind only China and Brazil.
  • In 2024, India produced only 2,900 tonnes of rare earths, ranking seventh globally.
  • Most of India's reserves are found in monazite-rich coastal sands, which also contain thorium, a radioactive element.
  • Production was largely restricted and handled mainly by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL), where rare earth elements were treated as by-products rather than strategic resources.
  • China controls about 90 per cent of global rare earth refining capacity and almost the entire processing of heavy rare earth elements.
  • India holds nearly 6-7 per cent of global rare earth reserves, yet contributes less than 1 per cent of global production.
  • The report highlighted that processing and refining is the biggest challenge, as India has very limited processing and refining capacity.
Scientists discover new class of magma ocean liquid planets using James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) (Mid of March)
  • Scientists have identified a new category of exoplanets known as magma ocean worlds, which exist in a permanent molten state.
  • The discovery, detailed in the journal Nature Astronomy, was made using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
  • The primary example of this new class is L 98-59 d, located approximately 35 light-years away from Earth.
  • L 98-59 d has a radius approximately 1.63 times larger and a mass 1.64 times that of Earth.
  • The planet's surface temperature reaches approximately 1,900°C, and it is enveloped in a thick atmosphere rich in hydrogen sulfide.
  • The molten state is maintained by a runaway greenhouse effect and tidal heating caused by the gravitational pull of neighbouring planets.
  • The planet orbits a small red star and features a mantle composed of molten silicate with a likely molten core.

University of Reading study shows lethal moist heatwaves during southwest monsoon can be predicted weeks in advance (Start of March)
  • Moist heatwaves occur when high temperature combines with high humidity, preventing sweat evaporation and raising risk of fatal heatstroke within hours.
  • University of Reading (UoR) scientists analysed 1940-2023 weather data and found timings and locations of moist heatwaves align with active and break phases of the southwest monsoon (SWM).

  • The large-scale weather pattern governing these events is the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation, a 30-90 day pattern of storm movement between Indian and western Pacific Oceans from June to September.
  • Forecast lead time for moist heatwaves is two to four weeks, with heatwave occurrence over northern India rising 125% above normal during a specific phase of this pattern.
  • Globally accepted human survivability wet bulb temperature limit is 35°C, but November 2023 Nature Communications paper revised limits to 25.8-34.1°C for younger adults and 21.9-33.7°C for older adults.
