The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district as Parshurampuri.
The existing Jalalabad Nagar Palika Parishad has been renamed as Parshurampuri Nagar Palika Parishad.
The renaming proposal received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in August 2025.
The move is based on the belief that the town is the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Jalalabad was established during the Mughal period and derived its name from Emperor Akbar, also known as Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar.
