Researchers develop multi-layered wound pad from red ivy plant extract (Mid of September)
  • Researchers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden & Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Palode, have tapped into the wound-healing properties of the red ivy plant, known locally as “murikooti pacha” (Strobilanthes alternata, belonging to the Acanthaceae family) to develop an innovative and multifunctional wound-healing pad using nanomaterials like electro-spun.
  • The product was developed by a team of scientists at the Centre of Excellence in Phytochemical Nanotechnology of the JNTBGRI by identifying and isolating a new molecule, acteoside, from the red ivy plant.
  • The key ingredient in the multi-layered wound pad developed by the scientists is the acteoside molecule derived from the red ivy plant, which has high efficacy even at lower concentrations of 0.2%.
  • The wound pad has been designed with a specially engineered electro-spun nanofiber layer, made from biodegradable and non-toxic polymers and is incredibly thin.
  • Along with acteoside, it also incorporates the antibiotic neomycin sulfate, blended with FDA-approved polymers.
  • The wound pad also incorporates a super absorbent sponge crafted from sodium alginate, along with an activated carbon layer.
  • Animal studies on excision wounds have shown that the pad can significantly expedite the healing process, the scientists claim.

Union Government Announces Aid and Recovery Measures for Flood-Hit Uttarakhand (Mid of September)

  • The feature allows setting a monthly spending limit of up to Rs 15,000 and an expiry duration of up to 5 years.
  • Secondary users can initiate and complete UPI payments directly from the primary user’s account without needing their own bank-linked UPI ID.
  • Use-cases include senior citizens making small-valued transactions independently and parents enabling controlled access for young adults’ daily or educational expenses.
  • Business owners can delegate operational payments such as fuel and tolls to staff while maintaining transparency and eliminating cash handling.
  • Identity verification is done using Aadhaar or other available documents during the delegation setup.
UPI transactions hit record Rs 27.28 lakh crore in October with 20.7 billion payments (Start of November)
  • UPI transactions reached an all-time high of Rs 27.28 lakh crore in October, clocking 20.7 billion transactions.
  • This marks a 9.5% month-on-month rise in transaction value from Rs 24.9 lakh crore in September and a 16% jump year-on-year from Rs 23.49 lakh crore in October 2023.
  • UPI now powers 85% of all digital transactions in India and accounts for nearly half of global real-time digital payments.
  • The festival month saw an average of 668 million transactions per day, with an average daily value of Rs 87,993 crore.
