  • Credit to women business borrowers registered a CAGR of 31% between 2022 and 2025.
  • 19% of active Microfinance Institution (MFI) borrowers now hold individual retail or commercial loans.
  • Northern states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh show increased growth in women’s credit access alongside southern and western states.
  • The report analysed longitudinal credit bureau data of approximately 16 crore credit-active women and primary research with 161 rural women nano-entrepreneurs.

  • State Bank of India (SBI) announced a $500 million syndicated social term loan facility focused exclusively on women’s economic empowerment.
  • The facility includes a greenshoe option and was launched ahead of International Women’s Day.
  • SBI stated the transaction supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower all Women and Girls.
  • SBI Chairman C S Setty said the loan reflects the bank’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and creating opportunities for women.
  • SBI noted the facility is expected to become the largest gender-themed loan globally by an Indian financial institution.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) approves $300 million loan to IIFL Home Finance for women-focused affordable housing. (Start of March)
  • IIFL Home Finance Limited signed a $300 million loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB).
  • The loan targets women in low-income communities in peri-urban and urban areas and lagging states of India.
  • Over 25% of the loan proceeds are earmarked for green-certified affordable homes.
  • The financing package includes $150 million from ADB and $150 million in parallel loans from MUFG, Emirates Bank, Sampath Bank, and Hatton National Bank.
  • This marks IIFL Home Finance’s first syndicated external commercial borrowing.
L&T Finance Ltd (LTF) launches Spoorthi to extend specialised Home Loan and Loan Against Property to women entrepreneurs. (Start of March)
  • L&T Finance Ltd (LTF) announced Spoorthi on Women’s Day to provide Home Loans and Loan Against Property (LAP) for business expansion and working capital to women entrepreneurs.
  • Spoorthi offers extended tenors up to 25 years for Home Loans and LAP, and up to 12 years for Industrial LAP.
  • The programme provides enhanced eligibility norms, higher debt-to-income ratios, lower interest rates, and relaxed business vintage requirements.
  • Initial rollout covers Mumbai MMR, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
  • Woman borrower must hold at least 50% stake in the business and contribute minimum 50% of total appraised income when clubbed with other borrowers.
  • Business must show annual cash profit of at least Rs. 5 Lakhs as per latest Income Tax Return (ITR) and no net loss in the last two years.
  • For loans up to Rs. 75 Lakhs, the minimum business vintage requirement is reduced to two years.
