Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 Notified to be Effective from April 1, 2026

  • Madras high court has reaffirmed that only the Thengalai sub-sect of Sri Vaishnava holds exclusive rights to lead religious recitations and rituals at the Sri Devarajaswamy Temple in Kancheepuram.
  • The court observed that earlier landmark judgments from 1882, 1915, 1939, and 1969 already determined that the Adhyapaka Mirasi rights belong exclusively to the Thengalai sect residing in Kanchipuram.
  • The bench ruled that these findings continue to remain legally valid and enforceable, noting that the Vadagalai sect’s participation must be limited to joining the recitation as worshippers without independent invocation.

Uttar Pradesh State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (UP-SEIAA) cancels Environmental Clearance for sand mining in Jhansi (End of December)
  • The Uttar Pradesh State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (UP-SEIAA) cancelled the environmental clearance (EC) for sand mining on river Dhasan in Jhansi district.
  • The EC was previously cancelled after gross irregularities were discovered during the excavation of sand from the riverbed.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) bench stated in their judgment dated Dec 24 that the appeal was barred by the limitation of the appeal time, which is a maximum period of 90 days.
  • The court fined Saxena Rs 25,000 for his false claim of not receiving the order of cancellation of the EC.
Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order 2025 allows persecuted minorities entry till December 31 2024 (Start of December)
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order 2025 on September 1 this year.
  • The order exempts Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who entered India on or before December 31 2024 due to religious persecution to stay without valid travel documents.
  • The Supreme Court has sought the Centre’s response on whether this order violates the Assam Accord’s March 25 1971 deadline.

  • The 77th Republic Day Parade was held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi with the dominant theme of 150 years of Vande Mataram.
  • The Bhairav light commando battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry regiment, a specialised assault infantry unit designed for rapid response, made its debut in the national parade.
  • The Shaktiban Regiment, a newly raised artillery unit equipped with drones, counter-drones, and loiter munition, was showcased for the first time.
  • The Universal Rocket Launcher System (Suryastra) with deep-strike capabilities and the Long Range Anti-Ship Hypersonic Missile (LR-AShM) by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were displayed.
  • For the first time, the mounted 61 Cavalry contingent appeared in combat gear, departing from their traditional ceremonial uniform.
