  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a mandatory three-year cooling-off period for directors of Urban Co-operative Banks (UCB), State Co-operative Banks (StCB), and Central Co-operative Banks (CCB) who complete a continuous tenure of 10 years.
  • The Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025 increased the maximum continuous tenure for directors from eight years to ten years, effective August 1, 2025.
  • The tenure ceiling for directors came into force for UCBs on June 29, 2020, and for StCBs and CCBs on April 1, 2021.
  • During the three-year cooling-off period, former directors shall not be associated with the same bank in any capacity other than as a member or customer.
  • For calculating continuous tenure, interruptions of less than three years are included, and only interruptions of at least three years reset the tenure calculation clock.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Cancels Licence of Sarvodaya Co-operative Bank Ltd., Mumbai (Mid of May)
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the licence of Sarvodaya Co-operative Bank Ltd., Mumbai, effective from the close of business on May 12, 2026.
  • The RBI stated that the bank lacks adequate capital and earning prospects, making its continuance prejudicial to the interests of its depositors.
  • The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra, has been requested to issue a winding-up order and appoint a liquidator for the bank.
  • Depositors are entitled to receive insurance claims up to a monetary ceiling of ₹5,00,000 from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
  • Approximately 98.36 per cent of depositors are entitled to full deposit recovery, with the DICGC having already paid ₹26.72 crore as of March 31, 2026.

India to release Request for Proposal for Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft manufacturing
