Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) Exceeds Greenwald Limit and Breaks Nuclear Fusion Density Record (Mid of January)
  • The breakthrough was performed at the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), nicknamed the 'Artificial Sun', which is China’s cutting-edge fusion reactor.
  • EAST has already broken a variety of records, including the longest sustained ultra-hot plasma for 1,066 seconds – that’s 17 minutes and 46 seconds of plasma well beyond 100 million degrees Celsius.
  • Nuclear fusion reactors work by reproducing what goes on inside the Sun where hydrogen atoms merge, turning into helium atoms and releasing a lot of energy.
  • By tweaking the initial parameters, such as the gas pressure and the heating resonance of the electrons in the plasma – how the particles respond to microwaves – the team was able to get densities with no instabilities at 1.3 to 1.65 times the Greenwald limit.
  • The findings suggest a practical and scalable pathway for extending density limits in tokamaks and next-generation burning plasma fusion devices, said study co-lead author Ping Zhu, a professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Science and Technology in China.
  • The study is published in the journal Science Advances.
NASA Confirms Strongest Geomagnetic Storm of the Year (G5 Event) (Start of November)
  • NASA confirmed Earth is experiencing its strongest geomagnetic storm of the year, identified as a G5 event.
  • The storm was caused by multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched in quick succession from the Sun, which merged into a massive solar plasma wave.
  • According to NASA and NOAA’s joint reports, the current geomagnetic storm reached a G5 level, the highest on the geomagnetic scale.
  • The event made auroras visible at lower latitudes than usual, including parts of northern Europe, Canada, the United States, the UK, Tasmania, and southern New Zealand.
  • Technological impacts included temporary communication dropouts for satellite operators and rerouted polar flights by airlines to avoid high radiation exposure.
  • NASA scientists stress that better forecasting models and improved space-weather monitoring are vital to protect modern infrastructure.
  • Experts warn that as the Sun approaches its peak in the current 11-year solar cycle, more eruptions are expected, potentially leading to stronger or more frequent geomagnetic storms.
Google’s Project Suncatcher Faces Space-Debris Threat in Crowded Low Earth Orbit (Mid of December)
  • Google unveiled Project Suncatcher, an 81-satellite constellation to harvest sunlight in low Earth orbit for space-based AI data centers.
  • The constellation would operate in Sun-synchronous orbit about 400 miles above Earth, the single most congested highway in low Earth orbit.
  • Satellites would fly with a radius of just one kilometer, each node spaced less than 200 meters apart to form a distributed AI processing cluster.
  • Space debris travels at approximately 17,500 miles per hour; colliding with debris the size of a blueberry would feel like being hit by a falling anvil.
  • The U.S. Space Force tracks over 40,000 objects larger than a softball, representing less than 1 % of the lethal objects in orbit.
  • Starlink performed 144,404 collision-avoidance maneuvers in the first six months of 2025, illustrating the scale of avoidance needed for dense constellations.
  • A use-tax or orbital-use fee has been proposed to charge operators based on orbital stress, funding active debris removal missions.
Chandrayaan-3 detects surprisingly active plasma over Moon’s south pole (Mid of December)
  • Chandrayaan-3 detects surprisingly active plasma over the Moon’s south pole.
  • The Radio Anatomy of the Moon Bound Hypersensitive ionosphere and Atmosphere–Langmuir Probe (RAMBHA-LP) instrument offers the first ground truth of the Moon’s near-surface plasma at southern high latitudes.
  • The lander Vikram’s data showed that electrons close to the ground carry surprisingly high energies.
  • Their kinetic temperatures were measured at roughly 3,000 to 8,000 Kelvin, indicating a plasma layer far more energised than previously understood.
  • Just above the surface, the “plasma” (a mix of charged particles) is far denser and more energetic than earlier remote observations.
  • Plasma is often described as the fourth state of matter, a blend of charged particles such as ions and free electrons.
  • On the Moon, this thin plasma layer, sometimes called the lunar ionosphere, is shaped by a complex mix of processes.
  • A constant flux of solar wind streams of electrons and ions rushed out from the Sun and strikes the Moon’s airless surface.
  • Through the photoelectric effect, high-energy sunlight also removes electrons from surface atoms, increasing the ionised environment.
  • The Moon receives a new supply of charged particles from our planet’s extended magnetic field as it drifts into Earth’s magnetotail for a few days.
  • At the mission’s landing site Shiv Shakti Point (69.3° S, 32.3° E), the RAMBHA-LP instrument detected electron densities ranging between 380 and 600 particles per cubic centimetre.
  • These values are markedly higher than earlier estimates, which relied on remote-sensing techniques such as radio occultation.
  • Researchers found that this plasma does not remain steady but changes depending on the Moon’s position during its orbit around Earth.
  • During lunar daylight, when the Moon is fully exposed to the Sun, and outside Earth’s magnetic influence, the interaction between solar wind particles and the Moon’s sparse exosphere drives much of the variation.
  • When the Moon enters the geomagnetic tail on the far side of Earth, the plasma takes on a different character, shaped by streams of charged particles flowing through that elongated magnetic region.
  • Insights from the mission also suggest that molecules such as carbon dioxide and water vapour may contribute to the behaviour of the lunar ionosphere.
  • According to the Lunar Ionospheric Model developed in-house, molecular ions alongside the expected elemental ones play a meaningful role in forming the charged layer hovering near the surface.
  • These measurements provide essential “ground truth” for future lunar exploration, especially for missions targeting the Moon’s southern high latitudes.
  • RAMBHA-LP’s development was spearheaded by the Space Physics Laboratory at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.
